10.  Plan to pick up your boat by the Sunday following your launch.

Spend an afternoon in the early 1900’s. Churn butter, crank the ice cream freezer, make a needlework sample or tie some mariner’s knots, write on slates and participate in a Spelling Bee in our one room school, learn to grow tobacco, visit St. Mark’s Episcopal Chapel, attend a Beneficial Society meeting or see if you descend from a member of the War of 1812 militia.

Herrington Harbour – Clean Marina of the Year

Herrington Harbour Marinas have been awarded with the inaugural Clean Marina of the Year Award by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR).  We were chosen based on demonstrated excellence in the overall cleanliness of the facilities, environmental services offered and by communicating and enforcing clean marina practices.

The Maryland Clean Marina initiative recognizes and promotes marinas, boatyards and yacht clubs that meet legal requirements and voluntarily adopt pollution prevention practices.  As of late 2009, DNR has certified nearly 25% of Maryland’s estimated 600 marinas as Clean Marinas or Clean Marina Partners.  The efforts of individuals and businesses on the Chesapeake Bay will improve the quality of Maryland’s waters from Deep Creek Lake to the Chesapeake Bay, to the coastal bays!

“Implementing and maintaining Clean Marina practices, is good for the environment and good for business,” states Steuart Chaney.  For over three decades, the first consideration when making any decision is, “how will this decision improve the environment?”, added Chaney.  As a result, the initiatives have produced significant improvements in water quality and in boater appreciation of the environment.  “Undoubtedly, Herrington Harbour is like no other marina in Maryland,” said Donna Morrow, Program Chief of Maryland DNR Boating Services.

How to Zero in on Vibrations

Author: Herrington Harbour

digipropWe get calls all the time about boat vibrations but often the caller is unable to tell where it is coming from.  There could be several reasons for a vibration including:  prop, shaft, bearings, rudder, couplings, engines, etc.  Here’s how to zero in on the cause.

Grab yourself a 5 gallon bucket and fill it about 2/3 full with water.  Have someone run the boat at the rpm’s where vibrations have been felt and set the bucket down at different locations around the boat: over the props, over the struts, rudder posts, trans coupling, engine, etc. At some point you will likely see the water start jumping around on the surface in the bucket.  This is where further investigation is needed to determine the cause of the vibration.

WestMarineR 2

Friday, July 15, 2011 – Sunday, July 17, 2011

West Marine has expanded the size of the store at Herrington Harbour North in Tracy’s Landing, Maryland.  The newly enlarged West Marine store is now 10,000 square feet with a broad selection of maintenance supplies, electrical and plumbing equipment and a sailing department brimming with hardware to meet the needs of sailors racing in the Chesapeake Bay or cruising on the Eastern Seaboard.  In addition, there’s a stylish assortment of boating apparel and footwear designed by boaters for boaters.

This West Marine will have a crew of 20 Associates with more than 200 years of combined boating, sailing and fishing experience.  Store Manager, Cristyn Johnson, is a Maryland native and has over 20 years of sailing experience (along with over five years of power boating and fishing experience) on the Chesapeake Bay.  During her down time she enjoys cruising on her 30-foot Catalina sailboat.

West Marine’s Grand Opening festivities include three days of special events beginning Friday, July 15th through Sunday, July 17th from 8:00am to 9:00pm.  Activities include fishing seminars, high tech electronic demonstrations, a kayak pool, door buster deals, prize giveaways and free refreshments.

Local marine businesses will be on deck with expert advice including Herrington Harbour Marinas, Free State Yachts, Integrity Yacht Sales, Shiver Me Timbers, Atlantic Spars and Rigging, Duffy Electric Boats, West River Cruises, South County Signs, Osprey Marine Composites, Marine Technical Services and Composite Yachts.

“All of us at the Tracy’s Landing West Marine are eager to serve our customers at our newly expanded location, “says Cristyn Johnson.  “We designed this store based on customer feedback and we hope to have all the products South County boaters need, for a great day on the water,” she adds.

Wireless Internet Booster

Author: Herrington Harbour

WiFi boosterMarinas are a challenging environment for wireless signals due to fluctuations in tide levels and materials such as fiberglass, metal and other electronic devices running on your vessel.  A booster antenna may be helpful to access the network and increase signal strength at Herrington North and South from inside your boat.

The Alfa Wireless network adapter, available @Amazon, came highly recommended to us from a Herrington slipholder this week.  Affordably priced at $32.00, 142 reviewers give it 4 out of 5 stars.  The mounting easily attaches to a laptop and supports Windows and Macintosh.
