We get calls all the time about boat vibrations but often the caller is unable to tell where it is coming from. There could be several reasons for a vibration including: prop, shaft, bearings, rudder, couplings, engines, etc. Here’s how to zero in on the cause.
Grab yourself a 5 gallon bucket and fill it about 2/3 full with water. Have someone run the boat at the rpm’s where vibrations have been felt and set the bucket down at different locations around the boat: over the props, over the struts, rudder posts, trans coupling, engine, etc. At some point you will likely see the water start jumping around on the surface in the bucket. This is where further investigation is needed to determine the cause of the vibration.

Although your boat’s natural environment is in the water, storing it on land during the winter months has many benefits for your boat as well as for your peace of mind. On land, your boat is not exposed to potential damage from ice and wind; and the bottom will benefit from an extended drying time decreasing the likelihood of osmotic blister damage. An annual dry storage period is also the perfect time to thoroughly inspect all underwater gear and fittings, ensuring that your boat will offer many years of enjoyment.
