Herrington Harbour Marinas have been awarded with the inaugural Clean Marina of the Year Award by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR). We were chosen based on demonstrated excellence in the overall cleanliness of the facilities, environmental services offered and by communicating and enforcing clean marina practices.
The Maryland Clean Marina initiative recognizes and promotes marinas, boatyards and yacht clubs that meet legal requirements and voluntarily adopt pollution prevention practices. As of late 2009, DNR has certified nearly 25% of Maryland’s estimated 600 marinas as Clean Marinas or Clean Marina Partners. The efforts of individuals and businesses on the Chesapeake Bay will improve the quality of Maryland’s waters from Deep Creek Lake to the Chesapeake Bay, to the coastal bays!
“Implementing and maintaining Clean Marina practices, is good for the environment and good for business,” states Steuart Chaney. For over three decades, the first consideration when making any decision is, “how will this decision improve the environment?”, added Chaney. As a result, the initiatives have produced significant improvements in water quality and in boater appreciation of the environment. “Undoubtedly, Herrington Harbour is like no other marina in Maryland,” said Donna Morrow, Program Chief of Maryland DNR Boating Services.

There are several ways to stay cool during the summer. Below are 5 ways to beat the heat and still enjoy the season.

Apply ice or cold water to your wrists and other pulse points.
Avoid drinking dehydrating beverages and drink plenty of water, low sugar drinks and mineral water.
Use body moisturizers and sunscreens with cooling aloe vera.
Scale back and eat more often instead of eating big meals. A big meal increases your metabolism and body temperature.
Wear light colored loose fitting clothes.

Marinas are a challenging environment for wireless signals due to fluctuations in tide levels and materials such as fiberglass, metal and other electronic devices running on your vessel. A booster antenna may be helpful to access the network and increase signal strength at Herrington North and South from inside your boat.
The Alfa Wireless network adapter, available @Amazon, came highly recommended to us from a Herrington slipholder this week. Affordably priced at $32.00, 142 reviewers give it 4 out of 5 stars. The mounting easily attaches to a laptop and supports Windows and Macintosh.

There’s always a lot of buzz each summer about which sunscreens offer the best protection for your skin. The long trusted Consumer Reports has the latest information on the top performing sunscreens for 2011.
Nine out of 22 sprays, creams and lotions were tested. The top performing three are: Up & Up Sport SPF 30 (Target), No-Ad with Aloe and Vitamin E SPF 45 and Equate Baby SPF 50 (Walmart). The lotions were rated based on how long they take to dry, the smell of the lotion and how well they protect your skin.
Think outside the bottle! You can also wear protective clothing (tightly woven fabrics/dark colors), and a hat that protects your head, face and neck. Now that you are ready, get outside and have some fun in the sun! (Video)

The crews at Schuman’s Boat and Yacht Detailing wash and wax thousands of boats every year. They know what products work on your boat and protect the environment. Cleaners that contain phosphates, ammonia, chlorine, high voc’s, dyes, alkalies, acids and detergents should not be used. These harsh chemicals may cause skin irritation, allergic reactions and may damage your boat. Most importantly, they will damage the waterways for current and future generations.
Recommended boat cleaning products include:
- Orpine Wash & Wax and Crystal Boat Soap for boat washing.
- Awlwash for washing a painted boat (awlcare).
- Citrus Bilge Cleaner and Odmo for bilge cleaning.
- Aquatech for enclosure cleaning Isinglass.
- Peroxy Clean for interior cleaning, vinyl and non-skid cleaner.
- Pure Oceans Rust Stain Remover.
