How to Stay Safe on the Water this Season

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

DougBarber_0925Here are some boating tips to keep you safe on the waterways this summer.

1.  Maintain a speed in the channel high enough that allows all boats to maintain headway and steerage, yet low enough not to produce a wake.

2.  Use clear, proper signals and radio terminology.  You may hail “I intend to leave you on my port” or signal one short blast.

3.  In order to avoid endangering the maneuverability of a vessel behind you, wait until you are out of the channel to hoist your sails.

4.  Inspect all safety equipment on board and make sure you and your crew know how to properly use the devices.

5.  Test your VHF radio to ensure it is in proper working condition.

6.  Be alert and monitor changing weather conditions.

7.  Tell someone where you are going and an approximate time that you will return.

2011 Herrington Harbour Spring Checklist

1.  Schedule your launch and service work as far in advance as possible.

2.  Make sure the office has your key or combination, before launch.

3.  Schedule your paint package now to help us meet your desired launch date.

4.  Leave at least five lines and two fenders in the cockpit/aft deck for the crew to use to tie up your boat.  (If not found, they will be supplied for a fee.)

5.  Take your ladder home the last time you visit your boat, before your launch date.

6.  The Yard will reposition stands at your request for $25.00.

7.  If you leave paint and a throwaway brush (by the keel) the Yard Crew will paint the pad spots prior to launch.

8.  Re-install your drain plug.

9.  The Yard will call with the slip location after the boat has been launched.

10.  Plan to pick up your boat by the Sunday following your launch.
